What was it that really made Rebel Without a Cause such a great film? Was it the teen acting? Or the really bad driving? After all, without the bad driving, which we can technically refer to as really bad teen driving, this plot would have gone nowhere. How many times could we watch James Dean smoke a cigarette on the way to school? Teen acting can only take you so far.
And was it really teen acting? Was anyone in that movie playing a teen actually a teen? Most of them look to be twenty or thirty or so. Once the cars fell off the cliff the movie took on an aspect of terror. A death had occurred. Was it someone's fault? Or everyone's fault? All the faked teen acting in the world couldn't get society to see it was really its' fault after all.
Some of the best, and also some of the worst alleged teen acting was done by the actor playing Plato, the young innocent with the pistol that decides that James Dean is his idol. He makes us feel bad for, and want to strangle him, at the same time. Teen acting is serious business, if you get a role, work it. You'd better work it. All night long.
